Introduction to searching
Improving Your Search Results

Our best advice...
Use fewer terms, and use broader terms, and check your spelling.

Spelling Counts
If you spell a term incorrectly, the lii.org Spell-checker might recommend the correct spelling, based on the closest terms it can find. However, the spell-checker can't catch everything (and it doesn't work at all in Advanced Search).

Try Truncation
This is very useful if you aren't sure of the correct spelling of a term, and our spell-checker isn't helpful.

Enter the first four to six letters followed by an asterisk (*), such as renais* for the term "renaissance." Placing the truncation symbol, the asterisk (*), at the end of a word returns any words that begin with the letters you enter.

Maybe it's not in lii.org!
lii.org has records for about 10,000 of the hundreds of millions of available Web sites. It's possible the resource you are looking for isn't described in lii.org. Try one of the Search Tools we recommend.

Too many words
lii.org only shows you records that contain ALL of your search terms unless you explicitly use OR in your query.

If you used the two terms crockpot chili, you would get "No Results Found" because we didn't have any records including both terms, crockpot and chili. To improve your results, try eliminating terms; do a search on crockpot to see the difference.

Very specific words
Using very specific terms works fine in big search engines such as Google, but not in small databases such as lii.org.

Think broadly, as if you were looking for a book that contained the subject.

Examples:

For Denzel Washington, try movie reviews or Oscar awards.

For lemon meringue pie, try pie or recipes or cooking or baking.

Try synonyms; for example, for rubella, try measles. But better yet, broaden your search by using the term diseases.

Searching for Web addresses
The only way to search lii.org for all or part of a Web address (or URL) is to select the Search by: URL option using the Advanced Search. If that still doesn't work, try entering the URL in your browser's location field or in a search engine.

When all else fails...
Try using other search tools.
