Hyperplasia, fibromuscular,

(FMH), (also called fibromuscular dysplasia), arterial pathological condition consisting of intimal fibrous stenosis, medial fibromuscular stenosis, adventitial fibroplasia and/or periarterial fibrous stenosis. It can involve multiple arteries including visceral and cerebral arteries, arteries of the extremities and most frequently renal arteries. The major clinical manifestation is renovascular hypertension. Aortography or selective arteriography demonstrates an irregularly beaded arterial lumen or a series of alternating slit-like stenoses and dilatations of the artery. It tends to involve the mid and/or distal renal arteries rather than the proximal third as occurs with atherosclerosis. Contrast-enhanced MRA may also disclose the arterial lesions.
