Hi Tonya and everyone -
I have very strong opinions about this one - there is no doubt in my
mind that pregnancy triggers FMD progression.
I have been pregnant several times, and carried two to term. Each
pregnancy triggered episodes that lasted months to years - even when
the pregnancy ended early in miscarriage or abortion. Hemorrage at 3
weeks was the norm - followed quickly by incredible edema, and
kidney shutdown with all the symptoms. The post-pregnancy aftermath
included all the symptoms of kidney infarction (groin and abdominal
pain, etc) - occurring episodically for 8 months to 3 years post-
pregnancy - and for 20 years was NEVER diagnosed or treated.
My last pregnancy resulted in a 3 1/2 pound baby girl (carried
almost to full term - weekly fetal assessments showed she was
starting to "starve" and lose weight so I had a C-section). I spent
the entire pregnancy in hospital on bed rest. (The diagnosis
was "early onset" eclampsia - which does NOT exist!)
Despite the fact that I had ALL the symptoms of renal artery
stenosis, it took 6 months after delivery to be "approved" for an
angiogram - with a committed female intern fighting hard for me with
my internist (her supervisor). The day she got him to sign the order
she was in his office for over an hour, they were both screaming and
shouting, and she refused to leave until he signed for me to have
the angiogram!!!!!
The angiogram showed FMD - I finally had a renal angioplasty when my
daughter was 8 months old, and spent 2-3 years in a fog...
I am not sorry - she is 12 now, taller than I am, brilliant, on the
honour roll, healthy, strong, creative, and beautiful... But I don't
know if she has FMD, or how she might be diagnosed if she does - I
can't even find a doctor willing to monitor her for the disease (of
course all they can do is follow her BP's, which is absolutely NOT
definitive, but even getting her BP checked regularly requires
a 'fight')...
12 years ago, when I was diagnosed, hormonal links were more than
strongly suspected and were being investigated... But it looks like
all those studies were dropped...
I won't advise you, but again, it seems very clear to me that
pregnancy triggers FMD.
Good luck, Lanie
